THE LAST WEAPON FOR TELEVISION
The increasing demand and popularity of web-based contents in India are acting as a black hole for Indian television. Slowly engulfing its existence. I believe in the next 10 years or so if things continue to happen in this way, television will be listed on the man-made extinction list. An end to the so-called small screen entertainment. Really? Maybe not. But the war has already begun. And we must prepare for the fight, or be ready for extinction. The choice is in our hand.
Our society has no censor board. It’s just pure filth all around. And we, the people of India are well accustomed to it. So why try and pour holy water on yourself standing right on the filth? Censor is the biggest joke now. It’s kind of a fake identity of someone, whom we never saw, who is a part of this filthy society saying all of us that they are filtering the filth on screen. What a sarcastic joke!
Indeed, we can not cut down television censor all of a sudden. But we can mould our system according to the demand for keeping everything well under the censorship. Our television is purely based on the TRP game, but its time we focus on content. Today the people are well aware of the worldwide media content, so the first step must be towards good content. We must think fresh, we need to hire people who understand modern content and its value. Old school people, please take a break. We must understand that the majority of our viewers are either young or the source of their viewing medium is small. A big target of television are housewives or people who stay mostly at home, but they are no more interested in boring stories, cause they all have social media now and believe me or not, social media delivers more masala than television. So what the hell is television doing? They are shitting around aimlessly. (No offence, just a frustration. Can’t just write with censor mode on)
The change must start from the ground level. We don’t need unnecessary people just to fill up the posts. A small dedicated group is enough to run an entire channel. But yes we need practical people, who understand the demand of the viewers. Focus on content than TRP. Enough we have played, tried and tested with numbers. Time for content now, numbers will follow automatically.
The days of well lit with sharp focus and well-decorated sets are gone now. You can not fool the audience by showing a middle-class hero of a boring daily soap living in a rich house. You can not show your housewives wearing the richest sarees all day and night. It is so, so fake.
There are daily soaps where the channel spends more than 20 lakhs for a single episode. If we put this same amount of money on a good content-based script, we can have an original tv film or maybe a very good season of teleseries.
I really don’t want to conclude this article because there are lot of opportunities that we can work upon. I want the readers to think on this.
